LLOYD LAYES, BOBBY STEWART & MALCOM MCNEIL
GRANDE CACHE, ALBERTA
Lloyd Layes, Bobby Stewart and Malcolm McNeil, underground mechanics, are three of the hundreds of coal miners from across Canada and around the world who were attracted to the Smoky River mine in Grande Cache, Alberta. Cape Bretoners, these men came as experienced coal miners from an uncertain Nova Scotia workplace. Although they have lived in Alberta for more than 30 years, each plans to return to Cape Breton upon retirement.
